Uganda: Children with cleft lip in Busoga sub-region to undergo free surgery

JINJA – Jinja Regional Referral Hospital in partnership with Smile Train, a non-governmental organisation will carry out surgery for children and some adults with cleft lip/palate.
A cleft lip/palate contains an opening in the upper lip that may extend into the nose.

With the blessing of the Ministry of Health, the medical campaign to correct the defect will now focus in Busoga sub-region where the problem is fairly widespread.
The principle occupational therapist from Mulago Hospital, Mr Francis Ekwan, said it is only fair that attention is focused in Busoga sub-region after successful surgeries were conducted in four Referral Hospitals, namely: Lira, Soroti, Gulu and Arua regional referral hospitals.

According to Mr Ekwan, this medical procedure is expensive. To go make it easy for those with the defect, a partnership with the Jinja Regional Hospital was struck, resulting into free surgeries for mainly children with cleft lip/palate.
The operation will be conducted between December 14 and 16, 2016. Currently the registrations are ongoing on at Nalufenya Children’s Hospital Jinja.
